WHAT IS A CANCER GRANT?
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States offers to its members a unique program.  A cancer grant is a lump sum love gift given to a member who has been diagnosed as having cancer.  Every member is entitled to this gift provided she has met the terms of eligibility. Applications should be mailed as soon as possible to National Headquarters.

HOW MUCH IS IT?
National Headquarters will determine the amount of the grant following the guidelines approved by the National Council of Administration on March 21, 2000.

FIRST GRANT

SURGERY & TREATMENT, ACUTE CANCER
Member must be hospitalized, have surgery and therapy (chemo, radiation, etc.).  Outpatient surgery will qualify. Member also qualifies if she has leukemia, lung, lymphoma or pancreatic cancer for which doctors can do little but treat pain and discomfort.

TREATMENT ONLY
Chemotherapy, Radiation, etc. (Given intravenously or orally) Biopsies without hospitalization.

SKIN CANCER
Incision, excision with or without skin graft.

SECOND GRANT

SURGERY AND/OR TREATMENT
Surgery, hospitalized and/or treatment.

TREATMENT ONLY
Chemotherapy, radiation, etc. (Given intravenously or orally) Biopsies without hospitalization.

SKIN CANCER
Incision, excision with or without skin graft.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM?
The Cancer Aid & Research Fund supported by Auxiliaries across the country.

DO I HAVE TO REPAY THE GRANT?
A cancer grant is not a loan. It is a gift of love and does not have to be repaid.  It is to be used to help pay your medical expenses.  Each Auxiliary member is entitled to receive TWO grants in her lifetime; however, they must be one year apart.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO FILE THE GRANT QUICKLY?
Cancer Grants may not be filed for deceased members.  If the member dies while the application is in process, National Headquarters should be notified immediately.  "In process" means date stamped upon receipt at National Headquarters.

WHO RECEIVES THE CHECK?
The grant check is sent to the member. In all cases where another has completed the form on the member's behalf, the check will be made payable to the member and mailed to the person listed as Next of Kin, Power of Attorney or the Estate of the deceased.

WHEN WILL AN APPLICATION FOR A GRANT NOT BE ACCEPTED?

1. If the member has not been a member for one full year before treatment.  This applies to reinstated members also.
2.
If current dues have not been paid and received at National Headquarters before the application is made.  This problem is encountered most often when dues are not paid early enough to allow processing by Department and National.  EARLY PAYMENT OF DUES IS VITAL FOR THIS REASON.
3. If member has already received TWO previous grants.
4. Member is deceased.
